Three years later, the Margrave declared himself a sovereign Prince and assumed the title of Grand Duke. Charles Frederick, the first Grand Duke, passed away in 1811, and his grandson, Charles, succeeded him.

Napoleon, recognising Charles as the new Grand Duke, presented him with a set of crown jewels, including this exquisite crown.
